Coding Corner: BCBS Provider Discounts and PIN Issues

Coding CornerThe Coding Corner is a bi-monthly feature, which highlights the most up-to-date medical coding tips, information, and legislation. HIS has over 60 Certified coders, who are experts in ensuring proper coding to guarantee compliance and maximize reimbursement. Following is a coding tip that we sent to our clients.

  • PIN: Many physicians dictate the excision of the posterior interosseous nerve when performing procedures in the wrist and hand. The AAOS in their Bulletin in August, 2005, published that this cannot be reported when it is done for post operative pain management. If there is another reason why the excision of the nerve, it needs to be documented in the operative report, and the neurectomy can be reported with CPT 64772.

  • BCBS Provider Discounts: This information was published in this month’s edition of the Blue Review by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois

  • Provider Discounts are Prohibited: Many businesses are offering discounted services through social media and other marketing channels as a way to attract new clients. This strategy does not apply to health care services you provide for BCBSIL members. The offering of any type of discount, such as a waiver of copay, is prohibited. Additionally, requesting pre-payment from your patient for covered services is not allowed.
